Jeff, Shawn, Skyler and I packed up and headed west to Kansas to hunt with Larry Larson of Kansas Hillcountry Guides (Kansashillcountryhuntingguide.com). We went out last night with Larry and he showed us where the birds were roosting and where they would be feeding. Skyler and I got settled in this morning and barely had time to get our facemasks on when a jake flew into our decoys. Dozens of birds sounded off across the ridge as its got lighter and lighter. Before long we had toms and jakes strutting all around us. We had a curious jake come strutting in to the decoys. It was tempting, but i decided to pass! For about an hour dozens of birds strutted just out of range. Finally three birds started to commit. They got to about 30 yards when they saw something they didnt like and got a little nervous. I waited for them to get behind a tree, quickly drew and settled in. He was about 40 yards out and I let it fly. Smacked him right in the body above the leg and he flew off. We found the arrow covered in blood, but decided to give him some time. We came back a little later and found him not too far piled up in some brush. What an awesome hunt!
